Baseball, softball, track and tennis started their postseasons last week, and golf will take its turn this week.
The St. Louis Catholic has the area’s top boys team heading into the postseason. The Saints have won four of seven tournaments, including the Elton Golf Invitational, Barbe Buc Classic, Iowa Spring Classic and Golden Tor Invitational.
The Saints will play in the Division II, District 2 tournament on Wednesday at the Lake Charles Country Club, along with Iowa, Jennings, LaGrange and South Beauregard. The Saints will have an eye on Teurlings Catholic, last year’s Division II state runner-up. The Saints have placed third or better at state in seven consecutive seasons, and the Rebels have been right there with them with seven consecutive top-five finishes. The 2020 season was cut short by the coronavirus pandemic.
The Saints have a strong lineup with three players ranked in the top 10 in Southwest Louisiana based on scoring average.
Junior Kye Hanks leads the area with a 73-stroke average, including three rounds of 67, despite an early-season wrist injury. He was the top medalist at the Iowa Spring Classic and Golden Tor Invitational.
“Kye is never out of the hole,” St. Louis Catholic head golf coach Pat Neck said. “His short game is exceptional. He chips and puts probably as good as anybody that we’ve ever had.
“And this year he’s gotten longer as he’s grown a little bit. He’s still not a very big kid, but he’s grown a little bit. He’s plenty long now, so he’s able to go lower on a more consistent basis than anybody we’ve had.”
Senior Samuel Broussard is second in the area at 73.44 as the Saints’ lone senior and has five top-four finishes.
“Sam is just steady,” Neck said. “I want to say every round of this year has been between 70 and 76. Even when he’s struggling, he’s always able to get it around the course.
“You can almost write him down for a score in that range every tournament. He’s been a heck of a leader by example for these other guys.”
