Over before it begins, surgery means Guidry won’t pitch this season

Gavin Guidry will not be able to pitch for LSU this season.

The former Barbe High two-way star, who was projected to be the Tigers’ closer this year with spot starts, will undergo surgery on Friday for an ailing back that has kept him off the mound this season.

Head coach Jay Johnson said the recovery time should take three to four months, “So we expect him back ready to pitch for us (next year).”

Guidry and the medical staff have tried various remedies and treatments since he woke up with the sore back after the Feb. 10 game he was scheduled to start at Nicholls State was rained out.

“It’s kind of been like a roller coaster of things,” Johnson said.

After an MRI, on several occasions the team said Guidry was close to being ready, even to the point he threw bullpen sessions. But the pain kept returning.

“Basically, the medicine was kind of masking the pain for a little while but not fixing the issue,” Johnson said. “We were trying to get him back, and he was trying to get back. Then, last week, it just got to be like … can’t do it.”

Guidry, who last year was 2-0 with a 2.59 ERA and three saves, was on the mound two years ago at the end of the Tigers’ national championship game victory against Florida.

Next year he will be a redshirt junior with two years of eligibility remaining.

Johnson said Guidry had stayed positive through the ordeal.

“He’s been great in the dugout,” Johnson said. “He’s still very engaged with the team. He literally sits down there pretty close to where I am. He’s got a window now where he can recover properly and get ready for next fall.”
