On Wednesday, the new McNeese State basketball coach signed his fourth former 4-star recruit from the transfer portal.

Carl Cherenfant, a 6-foot-5, 195-pound swingman, becomes the newest Cowboy to join a growing roster.

Cherenfant played last season at New Mexico State, getting in 20 games and starting five. The sophomore from Pompano Beach, Florida, began his college career at Memphis before moving to the Aggies. Cherenfant averaged 2.1 points and 1.9 rebounds per game and scored a season-high 11 in a win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, who the Cowboys will play twice next year.

He also had five rebounds, a career high, against Liberty, a mid-major that McNeese played last season.

“Carl embodies everything we look for in a student-athlete to represent our university,” said Armstrong. “He’s a high-character young man who values winning and plays with purpose. Defensively, his length and athleticism allow him to make a significant impact — he can pressure the ball for 94 feet and brings great versatility in the half-court.

“Offensively, he has an excellent feel for the game. He is constantly in attack mode using his length and athleticism to make plays.”

Cherenfant played in 18 games his freshman year at Memphis.

According to Rivals.com composite rankings, he was listed as the No. 76 overall player in the 2023 class and ranked as the 28th-best small forward in the class and the 11th-best overall prospect in Florida.

He prepped at Calvary Christian Academy in Fort Lauderdale. As a junior, he averaged 11.9 points, 3.4 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 1.9 steals per game, helping lead his Eagles to their second consecutive Class 4A Florida state title.

He chose Memphis over a host of Power Conference teams, including LSU, where Armstrong was an assistant during that season.

Cherenfant joins Larry Johnson of Creighton, Jacolb Fredson-Cole from Oklahoma and Jerrell Colbert out of SMU.
