Southwest Louisiana is invited to immerse itself in the world of “Budding Talents,” the latest exhibition on display at Imperial Calcasieu Museum.
“We want to showcase some of the up and coming talent of this region — whether that is high school, college or nontraditional artists,” said Ashley Royer, the museum’s creative director. “We just want to show people the amazing talent we are producing here.”
Royer said the vibrant showcase will feature the work of more than 20 emerging artists.
“There’s paintings, there’s pastels, there’s pen and ink, ceramic, it is gorgeous,” Royer said.
Thought-provoking and deeply personal, Royer said the exhibit highlights what these young artists value, question and explore through their creative practice. Their vulnerabilities will also be on display.
“All of the artists put themselves into the pieces,” she said. “A good example would be Madison Poindexter, she showcases personal memories in her paintings. We have some from Jason Richard, who is showcasing landscape from his travels and where he works in industry. You have a lot of personal points of view; they’re really sharing something with you.”
The high school students featured in the exhibit were tasked with the theme of food.
“We have Sulphur High School on display with some of their ceramics and these children had to spend so many hours glazing to make it look just right,” Royer said. “They make these realistic food ceramics. Some of them took their Latin heritage and they translated it into a Latin dish. You get to know a little bit about each artist just by what is on display.”
Royer said spring is a time of revitalization and renewal so it’s the perfect time to present such an exhibit.
“We are having new graduates going everywhere — McNeese graduates, high school graduates — and everyone is about to leave the grade that they’re coming from and are about to set off for summer and this is a time to take a moment of reflection.”
“Budding Talents” will be on display through May 30 at the museum, which is located at 204 W. Sallier St. The museum is open 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Tuesdays and Saturdays and 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Wednesdays-Fridays.
