LSU’s offensive frustrations continued Saturday.
The No. 3-ranked Tigers have spent the weekend looking for a timely hit or two, and came up wanting at Auburn as the No. 11 War Eagles took a 4-2 win to clinch the Southeastern Conference weekend series.
The Tigers (31-5, 10-4 SEC) will try to salvage a game in the series Sunday at 2 p.m. with Chase Shores (5-1, 4.66) pitching for LSU. Auburn (25-10, 8-6) has not named a starter.
LSU out-hit Auburn 8-7 and struck first on Steven Milam’s solo home run in the second inning.
But the Tigers stranded 11 baserunners, twice leaving the bases loaded, and were 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position, 0-for-10 with two outs.
“We were one more good at-bat per inning away from winning this game,” LSU coach Jay Johnson said. “Our team has done a really good job this season of creating its own good fortune, but we haven’t done that the last couple of days.”
Auburn was much efficient, stranding only four base runners.
The War Eagles took the lead in the fourth inning with a pair of runs on three consecutive doubles. They got two more runs in the fifth inning on Eric Snow’s 2-run homer.
“Credit to Auburn,” Johnson said. “I knew this was going to be a tough series. They’ve executed well for two days.”
LSU starter Anthony Eyanson (5-1) took his first loss of the season while allowing all four Auburn runs on six hits. He lasted five innings, walking one and striking out five.
Auburn’s Cade Fisher (1-0) go the win, throwing a career-high five innings while holding LSU to five hits and a walk. He struck out six.
