A Jennings woman is facing charges for allegedly stealing $40,000 from an elderly man’s bank account over the last five months after she removed him from a local nursing home against medical advice.
Betty Jean Fulton, 58, is charged with cruelty to the informed, exploitation of the informed and theft, according to information released Friday by the Jennings Police Department.
She is currently being held in the Jeff Davis Parish Jail on a $60,000 bond.
Fulton’s arrest followed a response by officers to a reported domestic disturbance in the 1300 block of N. Main Street on March 31.
Upon arriving at the residence, officers found Fulton and another individual arguing at the front door. The officers soon learned the dispute was related to the care of an elderly man living at the home.
The elderly man was discovered to be malnourished and living in unsanitary conditions. Based on their assessment of his mental state, the officers requested an ambulance for a medical evaluation.
Further investigation revealed that Fulton had checked the elderly man out of a local nursing home against doctors’ orders five months prior. Detectives obtained warrants for the victim’s financial records and discovered that Fulton had withdrawn over $40,000 from his accounts during that period.
