Harris, Reynolds in runoff for DeRidder mayor

Retired U.S. Army Cpt. Michael D. Harris and DeRidder Councilman Danny Reynolds will face off in a runoff election in May.
Beauregard and Vernon parish voters chose between Harris, Reynolds, interim Mayor Randy Larken and Beauregard Parish Police Jury Police Jury President Mike Harper in the polls on Saturday.
Overall, Harris received 750 votes, or 37.18 percent; Reynolds received 737 votes, 36.54 percent; Larken received 405 votes, 20.08 percent; and Harper received 125 votes, 6.2 percent.
In Beauregard Parish, voters were primarily split between Harris and Reynolds. Harris led marginally by one vote. He received 730 votes, or 36.83 percent. Reynolds received 729 votes, or 36.78 percent.
Larken received 398 votes, 20.08 percent. Harper received 125 votes, 6.31 percent.
Three precincts in Vernon voted in the DeRidder mayoral election. These voters were overwhelmingly in favor of Harris, who received 20 votes, or 57.14 percent. Reynolds received eight votes, 22.68 percent.
Larken received seven votes, or 20 percent. Harper received no votes.
Proposed amendments
Four proposed constitutional amendments were denied by Louisiana voters.
The first amendment would have given the Louisiana Supreme Court the jurisdiction to penalize out-of-state lawyers who operate unethically and allow the Legislature to create specialty courts at the regional and state levels.
Beauregard voters were marginally in favor of this amendment; it received 2,228 votes in favor, or 50.58 percent.
Vernon Parish leaned in favor of all four amendments; 2,252 voters, or 57.55 percent, were in favor of the first proposed amendment.
The second would have rewritten several parts of the constitution regarding revenue, budgets, savings accounts and taxation rules.
Beauregard voters were not in favor of the second proposed amendment with it receiving 2,225 votes in opposition, or 50.58 percent. In Vernon, 2,281 voters supported the measure, or 58.28 percent.
The third would have allowed lawmakers to determine which felony crimes can lead to those under the age of 17 to be charged as adults.
The third amendment was not favored by Beauregard voters. It received 2,288, or 52.17 percent, votes in opposition.
In Vernon, the third amendment received 2,125 votes, or 54.39 percent, in favor.
The fourth amendment would have altered the special election requirements for filling judicial vacancies.
Beauregard voters leaned in favor of the fourth constitutional amendment. It received 2,301 votes, or 52.53 percent.
The fourth proposed amendment received 2,252 favorable votes in Vernon, or 57.57 percent.
