A cold front moving across central U.S. is expected to bring severe thunderstorms to Southwest Louisiana on Saturday.
National Weather Service Lake Charles Meteorologist Donald Jones said some of these thunderstorms could be serve.
There are chances for large hail, damaging winds and tornadoes associated with a few of the storms.
“Of those, the highest risk is for tornadoes,” Jones said.
West Cameron, Calcasieu, Beauregard and western Vernon parishes have a 5-9 percent of seeing twisters; east Cameron, Jeff Davis and Allen parishes have a 10-14 percent chance.
Those areas also have a 5-14 percent chance of receiving damaging winds of about 25 mph and a 5-29 percent of receiving quarter-size hail.
“The time frame for this will be about 4 a.m. in the morning until about 1 in the afternoon,” Jones said.
Southwest Louisiana is not expected to receive much rainfall during this weather event.
“We’re not expecting this to be a big rainmaker,” Jones said, “so flooding should not be an issue.”
He said once the cold front passes, Southwest Louisiana can expect “very spring-like” temperatures.
Highs in the low-70s are expected into next week with evening lows in the mid-40s.
