Senior Addison Moreno and junior Lily Liles had hat tricks Monday night to power No. 5 St. Louis Catholic to an 8-0 win over No. 12 Sterlington in the Division III girls soccer regional playoffs at Cowgirl Field.

After Sterlington (9-8-1) thwarted several early attacks and goalkeeper Sullivan Cannon stopped six shots, the Saints (15-3-5) finally found the back of the net in the 18th minute on a shot to the right side of the goal by Moreno.

“I think there’s something about this field, Cowgirl Field, that just makes Addison Marino shine,” St. Louis head coach Alex Kjellsten said. “She had a very memorable goal last year in the semifinals here.

“She’s been doing a great job for us all year, working really hard. She’s got great speed and a super strong leg.”

It took another 20 minutes before the Saints found their footing again as they scored three goals in the final five minutes of the first half. The Saints outshot the Panthers 22-2.

“I think today we sort of struggled to find the back of the net,” Kjellsten said. “Sterlington did a great job.

“Their defensive line, they played a super high line. We weren’t really prepared for that. They caught us offsides a few times, but we made some adjustments at halftime. Rather than playing on their back line, we sort of pushed back and then ran through their back line after a ball was played through, and I think that made a big difference. Hats off to them. They obviously came in here with a game plan, and they executed it well in that first half.”

Liles scored two goals in a four-minute span, including one after Cannon blocked a shot by Moreno in stoppage time. She completed her hat trick with her third goal in the 55th minute.

“Lily Lyles did a great job tonight,” head coach Alex Kjellsten said. “She was hustling all over the field.

“She was injured last year and didn’t get to play with us during this time. Now, she’s scoring hat tricks in playoff games, so you just love to see that as a coach.”

Moreno scored her second goal in the fifth minute of stoppage time on a perfect shot up top and out of reach of Cannon. Moreno’s third goal in the 60th minute ended the game on the eight-goal lead mercy rule.

Corinne Zeringue scored the Saints’ first goal of the second half in the 45th minute, and Kylie Pousson scored a minute before Moreno’s final goal.

St. Louis goalkeeper Caroline Avery made two saves for her seventh consecutive shutout and 14th time this season.

St. Louis is 20-1-1 at home over the last two seasons, including 8-0 this season, but they will likely play on the road in the quarterfinals at No. 4 Academy of Sacred Heart-New Orleans. The Cardinals play No. 13 David Thibodaux today. Last season, the Saints beat the Cardinals at home 2-1 in the quarterfinals.
