Weather changes Cowgirls’ travel plans

The winter weather has forced a change in the Cowgirls’ schedule.
Due to storm conditions and for travel safety, the Southland Conference has moved all women’s basketball games scheduled for Thursday to next Monday night.
That includes McNeese State’s showdown at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
Instead of being a single game at 7 p.m. Thursday, the Cowgirls and Islanders will meet Monday at 4:30 p.m. as part of a men’s and women’s double-header. The McNeese men will play at 7 p.m.
The two teams are on the road at Texas-Rio Grande Valley on Saturday. The women’s game will start at 2 p.m.
On its website, the Southland Conference stated that it values the safety and welfare of its student-athletes, coaches, staff, and administrators. This is an effort to maintain the conference’s commitment to competitive equity while ensuring the safety and needs of all involved.
All four men’s and women’s games will be streamed live on ESPN+.
McNeese will be making its first trip to UTRGV since it joined the Southland last summer. That game will become the first of three in six days on the road for the Cowgirls.
McNeese is coming off a three-game losing streak at home and is 2-5 in the league and 7-11 overall. The Cowgirls are tied with TAMCC for the eighth and final postseason tournament spot with a little over half the season remaining.
“We have played better on the road this year,” said McNeese head coach Lynn Kennedy last Saturday. “Hopefully, we can do that this weekend.”
The Cowgirls have lost four straight to Corpus and eight of their last nine. They haven’t won in Corpus Christi since 2011. That is the only Cowgirls’ victory there in 11 games.
