Officials in Allen Parish are closing schools Tuesday as a winter storm is expected to bring freezing temperatures and a chance of wintry mix.
Schools will be closed on Monday in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, but Superintendent Brad Soileau said Friday that schools will be closed on Tuesday.
“After discussions with the National Weather Service and school leaders, a decision was made Friday to cancel all classes on Tuesday, Jan. 21 due to the winter weather advisory and expected freezing temperatures,” Soileau said.
“Ask we prepare for the winter weather forecasted for next week, including potential freezing temperatures, we understand there may be concerns regarding transportation and other related factors,” he continued. “The safety of our employees and students remains our highest priority.”
There is a strong possibility that the area will encounter similar conditions on Wednesday, however, school officials will continue to closely monitor the weather and road conditions through the coming days before making a determination regarding Wednesday, he said.
Students, parents and guardians are urged to stay updated through the Allen Parish School Board and school Facebook pages. Updates will also be made via the district’s phone call system.
