Javohn Garcia is overlooked no more.
The McNeese State guard has lifted his game to new heights, and others have taken notice.
Monday, the 6-foot-3 senior was named the Player of the Week by the Southland Conference after two huge games.
Garcia scored 50 points in a pair of Cowboy victories, including a career-high 26 last Monday in a win over Southeastern. He followed that up with 24 points Saturday against East Texas A&M in Commerce, Texas.
Garcia was 9 of 12 from the field, including 2-for-4 from three-point range, and made all four of his foul shots against the Lions.
For the week, Garcia shot 16 of 27 from the floor, 4 of 9 from distance, and 14 of 16 from the foul line. He also pulled down seven rebounds and handed out six assists.
He had 18 points against New Orleans to kick off conference play earlier.
“I just play in our offense, and we have been sharing the ball well,” said Garcia. “I just make the reads against the defense and go from there. I’m not looking to shoot.”
Garcia is the second Cowboy to earn the honor this season, joining Sincere Parker, who won on November 25.
“JG is a great player,” said McNeese head coach Will Wade. “He has been our most consistent player the last two years. He does a lot of things we need and does them well.
“I don’t know why he gets overlooked. He is that good.”
Garcia was one of four Cowboys to score in double figures in Saturday’s 75-56 win over ETAM. Joe Charles had a double-double, finishing with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Quadir Copeland added 13 points and six assists, while Parker came off the bench to score 14. Bryant Selebangue didn’t score, but he did pull down 10 rebounds as McNeese dominated in the paint.
The Cowboys outscored the Lions 40-14 down low.
The win was the Cowboys’ fourth straight overall and 14th consecutive in SLC play. Since last season, they have also won 23 of their last 24 against Southland competition.
McNeese improved to 3-0 in the league and 9-5 overall, maintaining a share of the Southland lead. ETAM fell to 2-12, 0-3.
The Cowboys play at Northwestern State tonight in a game between teams undefeated in league action.
McNeese will return home Saturday to play Nicholls at the Legacy Center. The game will start at 4 p.m.
