Avenue of Flags returns a day ahead

The largest display of memorial flags in the United States will fly here Sunday, Nov. 10.
“For the first time ever, the Avenue of Flags will be erected the day before Veterans Day,” said Kristie Hogue.
The bigger the flag display, the more volunteers needed — and recruiting help is easier on a Sunday than a workday.
The result is stunning. Hogue said 1,225 5 feet-by-9 1/2 feet casket flags honoring United States veterans of all branches of the military — past and present — will line both sides of the roads winding through Orange Grove-Graceland Cemetery, 2023 Broad St.
Flags are raised at 6 a.m. and retired at 4 p.m.
The project was started in 1983 by the Oliver Pollock Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) with 50 flags. The late president of the organization, Dr. Rex Smelser, envisioned it as becoming what it is today, according to a news release from Ted Harless, Avenue of Flags director.
Harless said he remembers Smelser as a “really nice guy who was very resourceful.” He was responsible for the Orange Grove-Graceland Cemetery allowing anchors to be permanently installed to hold the flagpoles.
Each flag is numbered, and information about the veteran is cataloged for reference. Families donated the flags.
Walk, drive, cycle or drive to see the display. To find parking, enter the east gate of the cemetery from Broad Street. Proceed to the mowed area for parking. Look for “The History Walk,” a new addition that tells the story of the progression of the flag. For more information, email Harless at ted.harless@nm.com or call 337-437-7810.
