For the first time since 2019, the Barbe Buc volleyball team had homecourt advantage Tuesday evening, beating Iowa in four sets to open the 2024 season.

Barbe won 25-21, 17-25, 25-6, 25-12.

Hurricane Laura heavily damaged the school and the area when it made landfall on Aug. 27, 2020. That kept the Bucs off their home court since the 2019 season.

Barbe played games over the last four seasons at several gyms in the area. They played one game on campus last season on Oct. 17, but it was in the main gym, which had just reopened after storm damage repairs were finished.

The Bucs never trailed in the first set but errors — both unforced at the and serving — started to catch up in the second set. Iowa led 5-1 early in that set before the Bucs pulled within three, 15-12, on a kill by senior outside hitter Kennedi Burks, but they couldn’t get any closer.

Barbe adjusted in the third set and surged to a 16-3 lead with Burks posting back-to-back kills early and two aces from sophomore Jane Casanova.

Burks had four of her game-high 15 kills in the fourth set and two aces as the Bucs never trailed to close out the game.

Barbe middle hitter Danyele Wallace had 11 kills while Madilyn Areno and Morgan David had 18 assists each.

Lanee Duplechain led Iowa with eight kills and Laura Armentor had 17 assists.
