Kathleen Phenice Montgomery, beloved wife and mother, passed from this earth into the presence of her Savior on Aug. 13, 2024. She was born in Pine Island, La., on May 8, 1937, to Orville and Elta Phenice, the second of five children.
Mom always said that she had an idyllic life growing up on the family farm, and she cherished her parents and siblings. She met her husband, Monty Montgomery, at Northwestern University in Natchitoches, La. and they married on Dec. 23, 1956. They enjoyed a loving marriage for over 67 years. After Dad’s flight school and four years in the Navy, they settled in North Texas, making their primary home in Argyle.
Mom and Dad had two daughters and later adopted three sons. After earning an education degree from UNT, she taught public school for over 30 years, even teaching at Denton Calvary Academy in her “retirement.”
Although Mom grew up attending church, she truly understood the good news of salvation in Jesus in 1972. After accepting Jesus as her Savior, her life was changed!
Mom wrote an account of her faith and had it bound one Christmas, giving it as a gift to her children and grandchildren. The title of her booklet was “I Stand Amazed” – she never lost that amazement of her Savior.
Anyone who knew Mom knew of her powerful singing voice, she was never shy about singing out at school assemblies and church services! In the last 10 years or so, she gradually lost the ability to sing with that strong voice… we rejoice that she is singing now! We will miss her so much, but we know that our loss is her gain, and we grieve with the assurance of knowing that this is not the end. “Death is swallowed up in victory. Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting? The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law; but thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” -1 Corinthians 15:54-57.
Mom was preceded in death by her parents, Orville and Elta Phenice; her mother-in-law and father-in-law, S.L. and Lucille Montgomery, and her son, Noel Montgomery.
She is survived by her beloved husband, Monty; her children, Laureen Montgomery, Gwynne Johnson (Miles), Scott Montgomery (Joyce), Shawn Montgomery (Ann); her grandchildren, Gunnar Johnson (Christina), Chase Johnson, Ian Johnson, Piper Mendes (Myles), Brandon Montgomery (Andrea), Noah Montgomery, Lauren Montgomery and Paige Montgomery, and great-grand-daughter, Aria Johnson.
A visitation will be held Monday, Aug. 19, 2024, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Mulkey-Bowles-Montgomery Funeral Home, 705 N. Locust, Denton, TX 76201.
A graveside service will be held at Roselawn Memorial Park on Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2024, at 10 a.m., with a reception afterwards at the home of Gwynne and Miles Johnson, at 1802 Mistywood Lane, Denton, TX, 76209.
A Memorial Service will be held on Sept. 13, 2024, at 2 p.m., at Denton Bible Chapel, 2300 E. University Drive, Denton, Texas, with a reception following in the Fellowship Hall.
