The Calcasieu Parish Police Jury approved adopting an ordinance to consolidate four Lake Charles voting precincts and one in Vinton at Thursday’s meeting.
Calcasieu Parish Clerk of Court Lynn Jones said the move merely formalizes or serves as housekeeping as construction issues and other matters have meant that some of the precincts have already been voting together at their current location.
“There were a few that were consolidated due to a decrease in registered voters in that particular precinct,” Jones said. “This does offer some money savings, as locations will not need a custodian, one less commissioner in charge and one less commissioner. This is usually triggered when a precinct falls below a 300 voter threshold.”
The Lake Charles locations are (1) 309 E and 309 W precincts will vote at the Pryce-Miller Recreation Center, 216 Albert St. (2) 313 E and 313 W will vote at John F. Kennedy Elementary School, 2001 Russell St. (3) 316 W and 317 will vote at Barbe Elementary School, 400 Penn St. (4) 319 N and 319 S will vote at Lake Charles-Boston High School, 1509 Enterprise Blvd.
In Vinton, precinct 1 is now with Precinct 700. Voting will be at Vinton City Hall, 1200 Horridge St.
The Police Jury approved adopting resolutions to approve putting three tax renewals on the ballot for Saturday, December 7 to include a tax of 10 mills for 10 years beginning in 2026, in excess of and in addition to other taxes levied by the Waterworks Subdistrict No. W of Ward 3, District No. 12 of Calcasieu Parish for the purpose of maintaining and operating the system, equipment and facilities.
(The Police Jury is the governing body for Waterworks District 12. The following tax renewals apply to districts run by separate boards that the CPPJ appoints.)
The Jury approved adopting a resolution to approve a call by the following: (1) Community Center and Playground District No. Four of Ward One of Calcasieu Parish for an election to be held Saturday, Dec. 7 to renew, levy and collect a special tax of 2.0 mills on all property subject to taxation in the District for ten years beginning in 2026 for improving, maintaining and operating the District’s Senior Citizen Center and for acquiring equipment, improving facilities and developing programs and (2) Houston River Waterworks District No. 11 of Ward 4 and 7 of Calcasieu Parish to renew, levy and collect a tax of 5.51 mills on property for ten years beginning January 2026 to maintain and operate its system.
