Jennings man accused of stabbing victim in front of 10-year-old son

A local man has been arrested in connection to a recent domestic-related stabbing incident that happened in the 1000 block of West Street in Jennings.
Derrick Lavoy Mitchell, 55, of Jennings faces multiple charges including domestic abuse battery with a dangerous weapon, domestic abuse battery with child endangerment, domestic abuse battery with strangulation and resisting an officer.
According to information released Monday, the Jennings Police Department responded to a residence on West Street after receiving a 911 call about the stabbing.
When officers arrived, the victim did not want to open the door. Investigators later learned that Mitchell attempted to coerce the victim into telling police to leave.
Upon entering the home, officers said Mitchell fled out the backdoor. Officers gave chase for several blocks before taking Mitchell into custody.
Officers and first responders rendered aid to the victim who had a non-life threatening wound to the abdomen. The victim, whose name was not released, was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
The preliminary investigation found that Mitchell initially started a verbal argument which escalated into a physical altercation in which Mitchell hit the victim several times and strangled the victim.
Mitchell also gained access to a knife and stabbed the victim in the abdomen during the altercation.
The victim’s 10-year-old son was present during the altercation.
Police did not specify the relationship between the suspect and victim.
