Shirley Dee Abshire

Shirley Dee Lege Abshire was born Sept. 11, 1938 in Gueydan, La. to Gregaire Lege and Nettie Humble Lege and passed away on Saturday, June 15 with her family at her side. 

Shirley graduated in 1956 from Gueydan High School where she was a starter for four years on the basketball and softball teams. She married the love of her life,  Curliss John Abshire, on Oct. 6, 1956 at Saint Peter Catholic Church in Gueydan, La.  The young couple moved to Lake Charles in 1964, where she lived the rest of her life and became a homemaker and mother to their four children.  Shirley loved to cook and bake and was known for her cinnamon rolls, wagon wheel cookies, pork chops/rice and gravy, sausage and potatoes, blackberry cobbler, and cabbage rolls. She also loved to sew and made numerous outfits/costumes for her children through the years. 

Shirley and Curliss owned and operated a floor covering business for four years.  She later worked in the office of Our Lady of Good Counsel as a volunteer under Rev. Jace Eskind for 12 years. She was a faithful Catholic and parishioner at Saint Margaret’s, Our Lady of Good Counsel, and Christ the King Catholic Churches over the last 60 years.

Preceding Shirley in death are her parents; brothers, Nelson Lege, Kenneth Lege, Donald Lege, and Gregory Lege, and infant granddaughter, Elizabeth Abshire. 

Those left to honor and cherish her memory are her beloved husband of 67 years, Curliss; children, Deborah Nunez (Ellis) of Grand Lake, Danny Abshire (Cindy) of Iota, Mike Abshire (Deanne) of Lake Charles, and Jill Abshire (Bryan Cameron) of Blue Point, N.Y.; sisters, Frankie Trahan (Tommy) of Houston, Texas and Mi Mi Prejean (Carl) of China, Texas ; grandchildren, Stephanie Peloquin (Andy), Jacob Nunez, Caleb Abshire, Amanda Stratton (Justin), Nick Abshire, and Chad  Abshire (Taylor); great-grandchildren, Drew, Adam, and Daniel Peloquin, Andi, Allie, and Avery Stratton, Meredith and Benjamin Abshire, Kamrin and Cayce Thibodeaux (Maddy), Blair and Elliot Nunez; great-great-grandchild,  Easton Thibodeaux; “adopted” son, Randy Fruge (Michelle), and numerous nieces and nephews. 

Visitation will be held at Johnson Funeral Home Tuesday, June 18, 2024 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. with a recitation of the rosary at 7 p.m.  Visitation will resume at Johnson Funeral Home on Wednesday, June 19 at 12 p.m. until the start of a celebration of life service at 2 p.m.   The Very Rev. Anthony Fontenot will officiate.   Burial will follow at Consolata Cemetery.
