Gumbeau Gators trounce River Monsters in home opener, local products shine

The Lake Charles Gumbeaux Gators’ homegrown talent put on a show in the first home game of their inaugural season in the Texas Collegiate League.

The Gators roughed up the Seguin River Monsters 10-0 on Tuesday at McNeese State’s Joe Miller Ballpark.

Five former Southwest Louisiana prep baseball stars combined for six of the Gators 10 runs and 10 hits, plus 7 RBI. Leading the way was third baseman Jake Smith (Rosepine HS / La. Tech), who went 2-for-4 with two RBI, two runs scored and a double. Davis Meche (Barbe HS / McNeese State) and Dillon Bird (Sulphur HS / Bossier Parish CC) drove in a pair of runs each, Owen Galt (Barbe / UL-Lafayette) scored twice and Gage Trahan (Sulphur HS / McNeese State) went 1-for-4 with an RBI.

The game started off quiet until the Gators batted around in the bottom of the third inning to take a 5-0 lead. Galt stole home for a 2-0 lead, Trahan plated a run on a ground out and Bird’s two-RBI single to left field pushed the lead to 5-0.

Smith hit a two-run double off the left field wall in the fourth inning with two outs, and Meche ripped a two-run double to the left field corner in the fifth inning.

The Gators’ pitching staff recorded 13 strikeouts and has a combined 1.27 earned run average over 35 1/3 innings. Starter Parker Morgan (St. Louis Catholic / McNeese State) struck out three in two innings, while Carson Laws (Midland College) struck out the side in the seventh inning. Travis Phelps (Lamar) earned his first win with three scoreless innings.
