A “very moist and unstable air mass” hovering over Southwest Louisiana today is expected to provide the perfect environment for thunderstorms to develop in the late morning as an upper-level disturbance moves into the area.

National Weather Service Lake Charles Lead Meteorologist Joe Rua said with daytime heating, the storms are expected to increase in strength and areal
coverage during the afternoon.

Up to two inches of rainfall is possible in a short period of time.

Rua said activity should decrease after sunset.

“Conditions favor a small conditional potential for severe storms, mainly wet microbust damaging wind gusts, and high rainfall rates that may lead to flooding,” Rua said.

For Sunday, activity is expected to be not as strong and not as widespread, before conditions begin to dry out on Monday.

Today also marks the beginning of hurricane season but Rua said “the tropics are quiet.”
