Saints, Broncos, Golden Knights, Yellow Jackets, Bucs punch state tournament ticket

SULPHUR — No. 1 St. Louis Catholic used its speed on the bases Saturday morning to beat No. 8 St. Michael the Archangel 14-0 and sweep the Select Division II quarterfinal series at McMurry Park.

St. Louis (24-10) earned its fourth consecutive trip to the LHSAA state baseball tournament in Sulphur next week. The Saints will play the winner out of No. 5 St. Thomas More and No. 13 Evangel Christian at 11 a.m. on Thursday in the semifinals.

St. Louis was 14 for 15 on stolen bases, led by Michael Vice and Silas Deville who had three apiece.

Deville stole two bases in the second inning and scored on Ryder Devall’s ground out to put the Saints up 2-0. The Saints attempted a double steal in the fourth inning. Carter Kramer was caught at second, but it allowed Vice to score the Saints’ fourth run.

Zachary Buxton hit an inside-the-park three-run home run to left field with one out in the top of the sixth inning and finished with two hits and four RBI.

Talan Tourelle and Kramer combined to hold the Warriors to two hits. Tourelle earned the win after striking out four and walking two in five innings.

Nonselect Division I

No. 1 Barbe rebounded from a 3-2 loss to No. 8 Mandeville in Game 2, to blank the Skippers 7-0 in Game 3 to win the Nonselect Division I quarterfinal series and advance to the LHSAA state baseball tournament next week.

The defending state champions will place No. 13 Benton on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at McMurry Park.

Barbe broke a 0-0 game open with five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Kasen Bellard and Myles Ledoux hit RBI singles, Ja’Derryian Washington had a sacrifice fly. The Bucs got two more runs on an error.

Ledoux was 2 for 4 and Kasen Bellard went 2 for 2.

 

No. 3 Sam Houston’s Griffin Hebert pitched a one-hitter to lead the Broncos to a 2-0 win Saturday and sweep their nonselect Division I quarterfinal series with No. 6 Live Oak.

The Broncos advanced to the LHSAA state tournament next week in Sulphur for the sixth time in seven seasons.

Griffin struck out eight and walked one batter in seven innings.

Sam Houston gets a rematch with No. 2 West Monroe in the semifinals on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. The Rebels beat Sam Houston 4-3 in the semifinals last year and in the quarterfinals in 2022.

Broncos scored two runs in the top of the 6th on a triple by Connor Walker and Grant Mathieu ground out.

Sam Houston shutout Live Oak 2-0 in Game 1 Friday as Nik Toups (6ip, 6k, 2bb) and Brady Foolkes (1ip) combined to shut out the Eagles.

Nonselect Division II

Defending Nonselect Division II state champion No. 12 Iowa (22-12) won twice Saturday to secure its return trip to the LHSAA state tournament in Sulphur.

Iowa won the first game 3-1 as Reed Duprepitched a complete game. He allowed one earned run and struck out three batters.

Cole Corbello went 2 for 4 with a run scored and RBI.

In the final game of the series, Tyler Dartez and Reed Dupre combined to pitch a one-hitter. Dartez got the win after striking out three and walking four in four and one-third scoreless innings.

Tyler Lavergne went 2 for 3 with two runs and an RBI double in the fourth inning.

Iowa scored its first three runs on a wild pitch, walk, and sacrifice fly.

Iowa will play No. 1 Lutcher on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. in the semifinals.

Nonselect Division III

No. 1 South Beauregard completed its sweep of No. 9 Loreauville Saturday to earn its return trip to the state tournament.

Clayton Folks pitched a two-hitter, and the Golden Knights beat the Tigers 6-0 on Saturday. Folks struck out nine batters and walked four.

Layden Sepulvado led the Knights at the plate, going 2 for 4 with two RBI, and Gunner Courtney was 2 for 3 and scored a run.

South Beauregard will face No. 5 Doyle in the semifinals for the second consecutive season on Wednesday at 11 a.m. Doyle won 3-1 last year.

Folks’ stellar performance followed Jace Duhon’s no-hitter in Game 1 Friday, a 16-0 five-inning run-rule win. Duhon struck out 10 batters and walked two.
