Locals can get ready to get dressed in the spirit of the Kentucky Derby for “Run for the Roses” from noon to 4 p.m. this Saturday, May 4 at the Horseshoe Casino, 100 Westlake Ave., Westlake.

This “derby-themed party with a purpose” will prove to be an energetic afternoon filled with festivities, dining and entertainment,  said Zita Andrus, foundation chair.

“This year marks the 150th year of the Kentucky Derby. What better way to pay homage to this age-old tradition than a party with a purpose?”

The energy will be brought by Jarvis and the Gents, “a dynamic group that appeals to all demographics,” when they take the stage at 2 p.m.

Meanwhile, guests can participate in a silent auction that includes high-ticket items such as spa packages, a vacation package to Disney, home spring cleaning, a brewery tour, lip filler, private golf lessons and more. Weather permitting, outdoor lawn games will be set up for guests, including horseshoes and croquet.

A buffet-style lunch will be served, and a cocktail hour with a dj will be hosted. To keep the music going, a violinist will be playing outdoors.

While derby-themed attire is encouraged to get into the spirit, it is not required to attend the event.

The SWLA Chapter of Jack and Jill of America was chartered in 2018. This membership organization is made up of mothers with children from the ages of 2 to 19, and is committed to “nurturing future African-American leaders” by providing children with leadership development, volunteer service, philanthropic giving and civic duty.

This is the SWLA chapter’s first fundraising event, and net proceeds will benefit the Jack and Jill of America Foundation and Second Harvest Food Bank, she said.

The foundation is the philanthropic arm of Jack and Jill of America. The donation will support the foundation’s mission to invest in programs and services that build strong foundations for children to thrive.

“The Jack and Jill Foundation believes that every child deserves access to quality education, healthcare, and a safe and nurturing environment,” she said.

A portion of the proceeds will support Second Harvest’s – a food bank that provides food and support to over 700 community partners and programs across 23 parishes – fight against hunger in SWLA.

Andrus explained that these two organizations were chosen because of the widespread impact they have on children.

“Promoting the interest of children is one of the cornerstones of our organization.”

Tickets for the derby-themed party of the season are $100, and can be purchased online at swlachapter.org.
