McNeese State head football coach Gary Goff signed a pair of newcomers this week to fill gaps in his roster.

Thursday morning the Cowboys picked up help at tight end, inking Logan Mauldin from Coastal Carolina out of the Sun Belt Conference.

Mauldin did not play his redshirt season at Coastal last year after two limited seasons in the program.

Earlier in the week the Cowboys picked up help on the defensive line, signing Simeon Mitchell, a tackle from San Francisco City College. 

Mitchell is a 6-foot-3, 305-pounder out of Oakland who played for high school and junior college championships. He had seven sacks for 50 yards in losses last season. 

In 11 games as a sophomore, Mitchell recorded 40 tackles with 20 of them being solo stops. 

Mitchell adds to a defensive line that was impressive during spring workouts and added four newcomers from the Football Bowl Subdivision level in the offseason. He is expected to help stop the run and add depth to a group that is quickly turning into one of the best on the team.

Mauldin joined the Cowboys just a week after Drake Martinez entered the transfer portal. Martinez spent just one season at McNeese after transferring in from Colorado State in hopes of becoming the starting tight end.

Mauldin (6-3, 240) has played limited downs at Coastal, catching just one pass for nine yards in 2022.

The addition of Mauldin gives McNeese 12 transfers from the FBS level, second in the nation behind Tennessee-Martin’s 16 and tops in the Southland Conference.
