Born Katherine Weldon in Lake Charles, La. to the late Timothy and Katherine Jones Weldon of Lake Charles, La. To this union were born two children, Betty Lou Jean Sims and Walter Burnell Jean (Mordessa). Also left to mourn her are grandchildren, Kimberly Singleton of Lake Charles, Nekiea Singleton of Lake Charles and Dr. Christopher Edgar Lavan (Jessica) of Providence, R.I.
Also left to mourn her are grandchildren, Alexus Lige, Armani Lige, Collin South and Nia Perry, Also left to cherish her life are her sister, Joyce Reed of Lake Charles and brother John Lewis of Shreveport. Her loving family includes step-brother, Anthony Weldon (Constance) of Lake Charles; step-brother, Peter Weldon (Willie Mae) of Sulphur; Etta Theresa Weldon Chaplin (Robert) of W.V.; Jacqulyn Weldon Blackman (Leonard) of Shreveport, La. She was blessed with four great-grandchildren; one step-great-great-grandchild, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. Her loving family include godsons, Ronald Guidry of Lake Charles and Cleveland Gallien Jr. of Spring, Texas.
She was married to her loving husband Edgar Jean for 64 years. They enjoyed traveling extensively. They were seen enjoying walking the Prien Lake Mall hand-in-hand for many years.
Katherine was a founding member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church where she served faithfully as Vacation Bible School Director for some 50 years, choir member, church historian, clerk and secretary. She was member of the Scholarship Committee, Women’s Missionary Union and youth counselor. She was given the “Mother of the Church Award” in 2019.
She enjoyed membership in several community organizations. She was a member of Lake Charles Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc for some 62 years. She enjoyed active membership in The Lake Charles Chapter of Top Ladies of Distinction, Inc. She was the recipient of the President’s Legacy Award. She had previously held memberships in Al Kadr Court #143 Daughters of Isis and the Mayor’s Commission on Women.
Katherine graduated from McNeese State University in 1961 with a Bachelor of Education Degree, in 1965 with a Master of Education De-gree and earned plus 30 graduate hours of study. She retired from Calcasieu Parish School System after 25 years of employment as a classroom teacher.

Viewing will be on Saturday, April 13 from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. in Mount Olive Baptist Church, 3007 Enterprise Blvd, Lake Charles. Service will follow at 4 p.m. with the Rev. Braylon Harris officiating. Arrangementsare under the direction for Combre Funeral Home.
