An investigation is continuing after a Lafayette man allegedly fired shots at police officers as he attempted to flee following a vehicle pursuit that began with an attempted traffic stop in Elton and ended in Kinder after the suspect wrecked his vehicle.
Blake Andrew Welborn, 36, is facing two counts of attempted second-degree murder, aggravated flight from an officer and illegal use of weapons.
He is being held in the Allen Parish Jail without bond pending a hearing scheduled for Monday, according to Allen Parish Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Blair Fontenot.
The incident began around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday when Elton police officers attempted to stop a vehicle for speeding on U.S. 190. The vehicle did not stop, resulting in a high-speed chase that ended in gunfire, just west of Kinder, Fontenot said.
The Kinder Police Department joined the pursuit before the vehicle wrecked on U.S. 190, just outside of Kinder.
As two Kinder police officers approached the vehicle, Welborn reportedly pulled out a .22 caliber rifle and began firing in the direction of the officers, according to Fontenot. The officers returned fire, but no injuries were reported in the shooting.
Welborn returned to his vehicle and attempted to hit a police officer before circling back around and hitting a patrol unit. Welborn then fled on foot, but was apprehended following a short foot pursuit, he said.
Several weapons and ammunition were recovered during a search of the vehicle.
