St. Louis hard to beat at ‘home’, one win from title shot

When the St. Louis Catholic girls soccer team plays in front of a home crowd, they are at their best and almost unstoppable.
The No. 2 Saints hope that the trend holds when they host No. 3 St. Michael the Archangel in the Division III semifinals at Cowgirl Field at 7 p.m. Saturday.
“Our girls earned this home-field advantage throughout the season,” St. Louis head coach Alex Kjellsten said. “We are looking forward to it.
“I think the whole student body is excited about it and just to be able to compete this far into the year on our home turf is really special. It is really a credit to the work those girls put in. We are looking forward to it. It should be a great day. We are super excited and super happy to be back at this point. Our girls are confident and they have been working hard. We are prepared to leave it all out on the field.”
St. Louis (17-4-2) has played home games in three locations this season — on campus, at the Ward 3 Power Centre Sports Complex and McNeese State — and are 11-1-1 and have outscored opponents 57-4. Their lone home loss was 1-0 to Division II No. 1 St. Thomas More at the Power Centre on Dec. 16.
The Saints are looking to advance to the state final for the first time since 2010, the last of a string of three consecutive state championships. It is their first semifinal game at home since a 3-1 loss to University Lab in 2018 and their fifth semifinal appearance in five seasons.
The teams are quite familiar with each other. They have met in the playoffs three of the last four years with the Warriors (14-5-3) winning in the quarterfinals in 2021 and ’22.
“The first year that I was back at this school was two years ago,” Kjellsten said. “A lot of those girls that are juniors and seniors now played against St. Michael in the playoffs when they were freshmen and sophomores.
“It is going to be really cool to see how much we have grown up since then.
“St. Michael is a great team. They are well-coached and fundamentally sound, so it is going to be a battle. They have a bunch of girls in the center-mid that can control the ball well. They have a lot of talent at the forward position. They have a bunch of good players that can hurt you if you lose account of them. We have to make sure we know where they are at all times. We have to play physical and our style of game.”
The Saints are coming off a last-second 2-1 win over Sacred Heart in the quarterfinals and look to benefit from learning to overcome trials.
“I think the main thing is that when things don’t go our way, we just have to continue to stay focused on the things that we have to do and that is what our girls did,” Kjellsten said. “We didn’t get down when they scored at the end.
“We just dug a little bit deeper, we pushed a little bit harder, and we were able to get that goal at the end and come away at the end. It is going to be the same thing this week.”
St. Louis’ Emma Roach (20 goals, 13 assists) and Adelaide Flavin (21 goals, 9 assists) each had a goal and an assist in the quarterfinals.
