Gwin Sorrells Jones

Gwin Sorrells Jones, born on Aug. 18, 1941, in Columbus, Ga., passed away on Jan. 6, 2024, at the age of 82 in Asheville, N.C. She was surrounded by her loving family at the Deerfield Episcopal Retirement Community, finding peace in her final moments. Gwin now reunites with her beloved husband of 60 years, Ross, who departed on April 9, 2023.
Gwin was a beacon of light, known for her ability to forge connections and nurture friendships wherever life took her. From Mississippi to Florida, Louisiana to Jerusalem, and finally settling in Asheville, N.C., Gwin and Ross touched the lives of many, creating lasting bonds that spanned the globe.
With a heart full of compassion, Gwin touched countless lives as a dedicated teacher to piano students and school children. Her love for learning, passion for history, and unwavering advocacy for those in need defined her legacy. Despite battling Alzheimer’s in her final years, Gwin faced her challenges with grace until Covid claimed her.
She leaves behind a legacy of love and compassion, survived by her three children and their spouses, and nine grandchildren. Gwin’s memory will be cherished by Sidney Ross Jones, Jr. and wife Leah of Friendswood, Texas, and their children Kyle and David; Lewis Bondurant Jones and wife Tamara of Decatur, Ga., and their children Shaifer, Windsor, Sydney Marie, Nelson, and Mara; and Kathleen Gwin Jones Hunter and husband Jack of Chapel Hill, N.C., and their children Thomas and Sadie Ellen.
A memorial service to celebrate Gwin’s life will be held at 1 p.m. on March 9, 2024, at All Souls Episcopal Cathedral in Asheville, N.C. In her passing, we mourn the loss of a remarkable soul but find solace in her reunion with Ross. May Gwin’s spirit be at peace, forever whole and reunited with her beloved husband.
