Doris “Jan” Janell Suydam

 Doris Janell “Jan” Suydam, 78, passed away on Feb. 8, 2024, in a local care facility. Having recently returned home to Southwest Louisiana from living in Arkansas, Jan “Came home to go Home.”

Affectionately known as “Jan” or “Mom” by those who knew her, she will be forever remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and devoted friend. Jan was a devout catholic and longtime member of Saint Pius X Catholic Church.  She was the best mom and stood with and always defended her children. Jan had a heart of gold and was a gentle soul, who desired to help anyone and everyone she met. Mrs. Suydam was married to the love of her life Michael Suydam, Sr. for 60 years. She dutifully cared for Michael until his death in 2021. 

Jan is preceded in death by her parents, Robert Louis Turner Sr. and Pearl Johnson Turner; son, Charles Suydam; daughter, Debra Suydam; great-grandson, Joseph Mele, and her five siblings.

She leaves to cherish her memory her children, Michael Suydam Jr., Cheryl Augustine and husband, Neal, Monica LeBlanc and husband, Eugene, Melissa Mele and husband, Patrick, John Suydam, and Jason Suydam; 19 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren, and fur baby, Buddy.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, Feb. 10, 2024, in the Saint Pius X Catholic Church Family Center from 8:30 a.m. until 9:50 a.m. A recitation of the Holy Rosary will take place in the church sanctuary at 10 a.m. immediately followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Jeffrey Starkovich and Monsignor Charles Dubois officiating. Burial will follow at New Ritchie Cemetery.
