The skid has reached double digits.
For the 10th straight time, the Cowgirls came up short.
New Orleans handed McNeese State its latest defeat, 74-59 Saturday in the Legacy Center.
The loss dropped McNeese to 4-17 overall and 0-7 in the Southland Conference. The Privateers improved to 7-12, 3-4, breaking their own two-game losing streak in the process.
The loss was the 12th in their last 13 games for the Cowgirls who have yet to win against a Division I opponent.
“Give them credit, they hit some big shots and we didn’t hit big shots,” said McNeese head coach Lynn Kennedy. “We have to put a complete game together.”
For the second straight game, the Cowgirls shot just 29 percent, hitting only 17 of 57 shots from the floor.
“We were getting good looks but you can’t shoot 29 percent at home,” said Kennedy.
Nora Francois came off the bench for an injured Nahja Scott to lead all scorers with a career-high 22 points for the Privateers. Her previous best was last year, also against the Cowgirls, when Francois scored 14.
Scott injured her ankle two minutes into the game and had to be carried off the court. She did not return.
Francois led four UNO players in double digits as DeArica Pryor added 20. Emilia Tenbrock led McNeese with 17 points.
The Cowgirls are in danger of missing out on the Southland’s postseason tournament which McNeese will host in March.
UNO took control of the game midway through the first quarter. After a solid start for the Cowgirls that had them tied 7-7, the Privateers went on a 9-0 run and never looked back, leading 21-11 at the end of the first 10 minutes.
They led 35-20 at the half and kept that margin until late in the third quarter. That’s when the Cowgirls went on a 9-0 run of their own as Boston Berry hit for the last five to cut the margin to 46-40 with 1:02 left in the third. However, the Privateers ended with the last five points to lead 51-40 entering the fourth.
Berry finished with eight points while Julia Puente Valverde had 16 for the Cowgirls. However, they could never get closer than nine points in the fourth quarter.
McNeese will conclude its three-game home stand Thursday night against Texas A&M-Commerce. It will be the second meeting between the two teams.
Commerce won the first game in Texas 87-78 despite a career-high 40 points from Tenbrock.
