A mistrial has been declared after a jury was unable to reach a verdict in the trial of a Welsh man accused of killing another man following a disturbance at a residence in July 2020.

The trial of Reginald Demond Jackson Jr, 23, began Wednesday and ended with a hung jury late Thursday after jurors were not able to unanimously reach a verdict.

Jackson is charged with second-degree murder charge in the July 2020 slaying of 21-year-old Mykel Guillory at a residence in the 1200 block of West Railroad Avenue in Welsh.

Jurors deliberated nearly five hours before informing District Court Judge Steve Gunnell that they could not reach the required unanimous verdict following two days of testimony and evidence in the 31st Judicial District Court.

Jurors began deliberations around 4 p.m. and came out around 7 p.m. saying they could not reach an unanimous decision. Gunnell sent the jurors back into deliberations.

The jury foreman later told the judge the 12-member jury was unable to reach a unanimous verdict and Gunnell declared a mistrial and dismissed jurors.

Jurors came out several other times during deliberations because they had questions and wanted to review some of the evidence.

“While the jury was unfortunately unable to reach a unanimous verdict in State vs. Reginald Jackson Jr., this does not diminish our resolve or belief in the compelling evidence against the defendant,” District Attorney Lauren Heinen said Friday. “We remain steadfast in our commitment to fight for justice, and we look forward to getting back to work on this case.”

Heinen said a decision had yet been made on whether Jackson will be re-tried at a later date or offered a reduced plea. However, defense attorney RIc Oustalet told the court he intended to file a motion for a speedy trial.

Jackson will remain in jail pending the decision.

Investigators said Guillory was shot and killed inside his residence following a disturbance involving a firearm. Guillory was found inside the residence suffering from gunshot wounds and later pronounced dead at the scene..

Several other people were inside the home, but were not injured.

Assistant District Attorneys Burleigh Doga and Alex Guinn served as prosecutors.
