Temperatures will be in the mid-40s today as a mix of sun and clouds replace Tuesday night’s hard freeze conditions.

Southwest Louisiana is expected to receive another shot of cold air Friday night through Sunday morning, according to National Weather Service Lake Charles Storm Warning Coordinator Doug Cramer.

Two shelters remain open at 2760 Power Centre Parkway in Lake Charles and at the Sulphur Community Center at 501 E. Burton in Sulphur to provide shelter for people experiencing homelessness during this time. The Lake Charles location will be open 24 hours daily until 8 a.m. Thursday. Three hot meals will be served daily, and shower and laundry facilities will be available.

The Sulphur facility is available for overnight use. It will close daily at 7 a.m. and open evenings at 6 p.m. through the end of the weather event. An evening meal and breakfast will be served. The Community Center will be open for their regular hours from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. but no beds will be available then. Lunch will be served.

Cramer said the area will experience a “nice warm up” on Thursday before temperatures drop below freezing again around midnight Friday until about noon on Saturday.

All Calcasieu Parish School Board schools will reopen on Thursday, as will the McNeese State University campus.

Cramer said no precipitation is forecast Friday night into Saturday morning, but a stormy pattern of excessive rainfall is possible Tuesday and Wednesday of next week.

“A forecast analysis is now suggesting a 40-60 percent chance for reaching or exceeding 3 inches of rainfall Monday through Wednesday,” Cramer said. “Additional rain could occur after Wednesday, which would increase rainfall totals further.”
