Catherine Mae Carter Mattingly

Catherine Mae Carter Mattingly, 89, passed away on Nov. 30, 2023 at Harbor Hospice in Lake Charles, La. She was born Jan. 10, 1934 in Simsboro, La. to P.W. and Gladys Hughes Carter.
Catherine graduated from the Louisiana School for the Deaf in 1953 and was an active member of the Deaf Action Center in Lake Charles. She was also a member of the Louisiana Association of the Deaf, Inc. and Arkansas Association of the Deaf, Inc.
Catherine volunteered to teach sign language classes at University Baptist Church for 14 years and also taught classes in her home. She was a member of University Baptist church and the Joy Club. She enjoyed traveling, her plants, and working on scrapbooks.
Catherine was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas “T.J.” Mattingly; her parents; her sisters, Carrie Jones, Linda Martin and Susie Watters, and her brother, Joe Carter.
Those left to cherish her memory are, her three sons, Phillip W. Mattingly and his wife, Carleen, of Lumberton, Texas; Kevin L. Mattingly, and his wife, Pam, of Jasper, Ark.and Brent Mattingly and his wife, Jolene, of Gretna, La.; one daughter, Phyllis Broussard and her husband, Jerry, of Lake Charles. She is also survived by her sisters, Marie Gillis of Magnolia, Texas, Alline Richardson of Minden, La., and Nelda Ronson of Tuscaloosa, Ala. She also leaves five grandchildren, one step grandchild, ten great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2023 in the Johnson Funeral Home of Lake Charles Chapel. Rev. John Astling and Rev. Aubrey Guilbeau will officiate. Burial will follow in Consolata Cemetery under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Wednesday from 11 a.m. until the start of the service at 2 p.m.
The family would like to extend appreciation to all of the caring staff of Harbor Hospice and to Gloria Broussard for many years of dedicated service to Catherine.
