Lake Charles Mayor Nic Hunter and District G Councilman Mark Eckard hosted the sixth of seven community meetings centered around LC Rebound – a tax neutral bond proposal that will consolidate and modernize the city’s current tax structure.

If passed during the Nov. 18 election, Lake Charles could see $190 million in hard infrastructure and quality of life projects in the city within the next 12 years.

In District G, this will include major improvements to Country Club Road. This is one of the long awaited hard infrastructure projects in Lake Charles that will expand the road. From University Drive to Nelson Road, there will be three lanes, and four lanes from Nelson Road to Ihles Road.

Like all of the hard infrastructure projects, the Country Club Road expansion will include drainage upgrades.

The total cost of the project is $50 million, and the city plans to contribute $15 million.

District G borders Sale Road and Lake Street so the area will benefit from the West Sale Road project. This $11 million project will reconstruct the road from Ryan Street to Lake Street and will support the expansion of McNeese State University, including the completion of the LNG Center of Excellence.

It will lead to drainage upgrades, improved sidewalks and increased student and pedestrian safety, according to the city.

At West Sale and Holly Hill Road, a kayak launch and walking path will be installed as a part of the city’s quality of life initiative.

The One Lake Charles Bike Trail will be eight miles of safe bike trail that will connect Riverside Park to Prien Lake Park in District G. Hunter has said that a connective bike trail is a long-term goal of the city and the One Lake Charles Bike Trail will have the potential for expansion in the future.

Eight million dollars in park upgrades are included in LC Rebound. Directly affecting District G will be the relocation of the Weaver Park ballfields to a location near Plainview Drive and Duhon Lane that is double the size. This location will offer better parking and less interference with surrounding neighborhoods.

The last of the seven community meetings will take place from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 9 at Drew Park, 416 Dr. Michael Debakey Dr. Hunter and District D City Councilman John Ieyoub will host the meeting.
