WESTLAKE — Playing at home brings the best out of the Westlake Rams.
The Rams improved to 10-1 at home on Wednesday after beating Vinton 25-9, 25-10, 25-10 in a Division III, District 1 match.
“I think we played well,” Westlake head coach Gloria Fontenot said. “I think we were focused and ready. With it being senior night, that was a good way to end it, and we are going to the ESA tournament. We played a unit together.”
Westlake’s only loss on its home court this season was in two sets to Rayne in a tournament game on Sept. 2.
The Rams (20-11, 5-1) entered the match ranked 14th in Division III and will need a solid performance in this weekend’s Episcopal of Acadiana Spooktacular tournament to secure a home game in the first round of the playoffs next week.
“We just need to get a little more solid on just ball control, speeding up our offense, control passes to target and speeding it up off that,” Fontenot said.
Westlake won for the fifth time in five matches despite still missing defensive specialist Grace Evans.
The loss ended Vinton’s (16-10, 4-2) seven-game win streak. The Lions are ranked 25th in Division III.
The regular season ends on Saturday, and the Louisiana High School Athletic Association will release the playoff pairings on Monday.
In the opening set, Westlake turned a tenuous 4-2 lead into an eight-point lead with a 7-1 run. Middle hitter Shamira Guillory had three kills and a block during the run.
The Rams used another big run to pull away midway through the second set. With a 9-7 lead, Westlake went on a 10-1 run, spreading the ball around as Margaret Jordan had two kills and a block, and Lady Fradieu added a pair of kills.
Vinton led 3-1 early in the third set on an ace by Addyson Orillion, but three aces from Fradieu helped flip the score as the Rams took a 7-3 lead.
Maddy Guillory led Westlake with 22 assists, three aces and four digs. Fradieu finished with a match-high eight aces plus six kills and two blocks. Saniah Captain had seven kills and a pair of blocks, and Emma Tradewell had five aces and eight digs.
Vinton got four kills from Emma Labby and three from Dru Coleman. Lauren Heinen had 14 assists.
