Sam Houston High School started the week with heavy hearts after the death of junior Kamryn Harmon.

But the Bronco volleyball team soldiered on, winning three games in two days. On Wednesday, they beat Sulphur 25-15, 25-13, 25-15 to win the Division I, District 3 championship outright. It is the Broncos’ third consecutive district championship and fourth in the last five seasons.

Harmon, a center on the Bronco basketball team, died on Sunday after an ATV accident that happened on Saturday. Her funeral service will be on Monday at noon at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Classes at Sam Houston High School have been canceled on Monday to allow students and faculty to attend the funeral.

New Iberia and Iowa High Schools worked with the Broncos to play two games on Tuesday. New Iberia agreed to move what would have been a home game for them on Oct. 24 to Barbe High School to accommodate the Broncos.

“Some of our district teams and Iowa were very gracious and let us make some adjustments in the schedule,” Sam Houston head coach Rene Fontenot said. “So that was really nice of them to clear our schedule for the beginning of next week for Kam’s services.”

Sam Houston (30-5, 6-0) won its seventh consecutive game and 11 of their last 12. The Broncos are ranked third in the Division I power rankings. The regular season ends on Oct. 28, and the playoff pairings will be announced on Oct. 30.

“It is good,” Fontenot said. “They are getting healthier because we had some nagging, overuse injuries.

“We are going to need to be fresh come the end of October because there are a lot of very strong 5A teams. It is because they are invested. I think I have said it before, it is the first group that I have ever had that almost all of them have played club ball, so they have more game experience. They make better snap decisions in real-life game time. I am really reaping the benefits. I appreciate the parents because I have been that route. It is a lot. They enjoy being around each other. That has been nice.”

Junior middle hitter Ava Henry and sophomore outside hitter Aubrey Portie led the Broncos with plenty of powerful hits. Henry had 10 kills and three blocks, and Portie was credited with 12 digs, seven kills and two aces.

“They have done a tremendous job all season for us for Aubrey being a first-year starter and Ava in her junior year,” Fontenot said. “They complement each other well.”

Sulphur opened up the first set with a 3-1 lead, but the Broncos went ahead for good, 11-10, on a kill by Portie.

Sam Houston never trailed in the final two sets.

Jillian Gaudet, Claire Mellard and Claire Weidner led Sulphur (11-14, 2-3) with four kills each.
