Lafayette “Teeny” Swoope Jr.

Lafayette F. “Teeny” Swoope Jr., 96, of Carlyss, La., passed away Sept. 17, 2023. “Teeny” Swoope, son of Lafayette F. Swoope Sr. and Carrie Prowell Swoope, widower of Elizabeth Nan “Nancy” Swoope, passed away at his home in Carlyss of congestive heart failure. He is survived by his three children, Elizabeth (Terrell Sheets), Kyle, and David; granddaughter Cheyenne Swoope Good (Kelton); great-grandson, Calvin Lafayette; brothers, Thomas Kyle “Dake” (Allene), William “Bill”, Frank (Carolyn), Warren “Oop”, Walter “Penny” (Bettye), Charles (Shirley), and Burton (Tonya); sister, Lucy “Boopie” Beard (David); brother-in-law, Nick Hairston; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Nancy; parents, L.F. Swoope and Carrie Prowell Swoope; brothers, James “Jim” and Edward; and sisters, Celeste “Boo”, Elizabeth “Sister”, and Eleanor.
Teeny graduated with a degree in animal science from Mississippi State University and a master’s degree in extension education from Louisiana State University. He was employed as a County Agent for over 33 years, in Caldwell Parish, East Carroll Parish, and Calcasieu Parish. He was known for seeing potential in people and recognizing the value of livestock projects for developing that potential in children, as well as for his knowledge of all types of livestock. He served as the manager of the Southwest District Livestock Show and a board member of the Southwest District Livestock Show.
He received the Louisiana County Agricultural Agent’s Award and was inducted into the Louisiana 4-H Hall of Fame and the Southwest District Livestock Show Hall of Fame.
Teeny was known for grilling and barbequing for large crowds. He and his Longhorn steer, Buck, were invited to participate in many parades and parties.
He was an active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, serving as elder, lay reader, treasurer, Sunday school teacher, and nursery caretaker.
Visitation will be held Saturday, Nov. 11, 2023, at 9 a.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church until the memorial service at 11 a.m. at the church, 301 Center Circle, Sulphur, LA 70663.
The family thanks Dr. Edward Bergen and the staff at Heart of Hospice for the care they provided for Teeny.
