Sheriff: Impaired 17-year-old driver strikes bicyclist, flees scene

A 17-year-old boy has been arrested for DWI and a hit-and-run that caused seriously bodily injury.

Calcasieu Parish Sheriff spokesperson Kayla Vincent said deputies were dispatched at about 9 pm Wednesday night to N. Claiborne Street (north of Granger Road) in Sulphur in reference to an accident.

During the initial investigation, deputies learned a man traveling on a bicycle on Claiborne Street was struck by a vehicle, which left the scene prior to the deputies’ arrival.

Deputies ultimately made contact with the 17-year-old driver.  When speaking with the boy, deputies detected signs of impairment, Vincent said. 

After further investigation the teenager was arrested and booked into the Juvenile Detention Center and charged with hit-and-run serious bodily injury; DWI, first offense; first-degree vehicular negligent injuring; and possession of alcoholic beverages by person under 21. 

The victim was transported to the hospital with serious injuries. 

The crash is still under investigation, Vincent said.
