Bonnie Lynn Broussard started her story in Lake Charles, La. in April of 1970 and Bonnie Gregg Sallier finished her earthly story in Moss Bluff, La. on August 14, 2023. It was those years in between that were the most notable. Whether you knew her as Bonnie, Miss Bonnie, Bonnie-Belle, Bonnie-Bee, SuperBee, Mom, or Mimi, she had a very adventurous 53 years. 

Bonnie graduated from Sam Houston High School and attended McNeese State University. She was part of Broussard, Gregg, and Neal Bookkeeping, then started her solo practice of Elite Bookkeeping & Taxes. Bonnie had 2 wonderful children, Christopher Gregg and Megan Funderburk, loving the years shuttling them back and forth between sports and activities. She traveled to beaches, deserts, mountains – but loved beaches the most. Whether it was Broussard Beach in Cameron Parish, Galveston, St Thomas, Destin, Cancun, or Turks and Caicos, she loved the sand, surf, and waves. The beach was her happy spot and where she would go to recharge her internal batteries. She was also a big Rick Springfield fan and attended several of his concerts, including buying tickets with her friend Becky Istre Laughlin for this Friday night’s concert in Lake Charles. Bonnie was never without a perfect manicure to grace her beautiful hands. She could have been a hand model with those long fingers and fingernails, just like her grandmother Katie Newton Garby. Both Bonnie’s childhood piano teacher and her maw-maw, Mildred Broussard, cried a little when she decided not to pursue any more lessons because of her talent and handspan across the keys. While Bonnie continued to play the piano, you could always gage her mood by the songs she chose to play on her piano. Ask anyone within earshot about her ‘Root Beer Rag’ rendition. 

Bonnie had a unique superpower . . . she could see the good in everyone she met. She had a huge heart, an easy and beautiful smile, compassion for everyone, a very effective ‘stink-eye’, a ‘ready to ride and rumble’ attitude, and had a lion’s share of courage as she faced 3 separate life-ending cancers. The first one was in 2004, the second was in 2010, and the last one was diagnosed in 2022. It was not what she asked for, but she always faced it bravely. Bonnie was blessed to have treatment teams here at Lake Charles Memorial and at MD Anderson in Texas. 

Bonnie and her husband Brian Sallier enjoyed their too-short but wonderful years together. Besides her husband, Brian Sallier, others left to honor her memory are: son, Chris Gregg and Kaylee Gregg and grandchildren: Olivia and Cooper; daughter Megan Funderburk. Her bonus children/grandchildren are: William and Nicole Martin, with grandchildren Paiyton, Abbi, Emilia, and Maryann; Anya and Tim Eaves, with grandchildren Tidas and Bruce; Alex and Chelsea Martin, with granddaughter Ensley; and, James and Lele Sallier. Bonnie’s father, Leland Broussard, and her sister, Jeannie and Greg Commer, with nieces Annie and Gracie, will also honor her memory, along with many other friends and family. She was predeceased this year by her mother, Gerry Broussard, and prior to that, her husband, Rick Whitney.

A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at Johnson Funeral Home of Moss Bluff on Friday, August 18, 2023 at 1 p.m. The Rev. Aubrey Guilbeau will officiate. Interment will take place in Old Ritchie Cemetery following the service. Visitation will be held at Johnson Funeral Home of Moss Bluff Friday from 11 a.m. until the start of the service.
