Qualifying begins Tuesday for candidates in Oct. 14 election

The Oct. 14 ballots start taking shape Tuesday, Aug. 8, as candidates begin qualifying for state and local offices in the gubernatorial primary elections.

Statewide the ballot will include an election for governor, lieutenant governor, secretary of state, attorney general, treasurer, agriculture commissioner and insurance commissionerBoard of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE) members will also be elected across the state.

In Southwest Louisiana, state senators and representatives, sheriffs, clerks of court, assessors, coroners and police jurors will be up for elections this fall.

Special municipal elections for vacant seats are also slated for alderman in Oberlin and Fenton and police chief in Merryville and Simpson, as well as constables and justices of the peace in Cameron, Jeff Davis and Vernon parishes.

Several ballots will also include propositions for tax renewals, including maintenance of roads, drainage, fire districts and courthouse facilities. Separate propositions to allow retail alcohol sales in the Reeves area of Allen Parish will also be on the ballot.

Local and municipal candidates can qualify 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. through Thursday, Aug. 10 at the clerk of court’s office in each parish.

Candidates for state representatives and state senator in districts that cross parish lines qualifying in the parish they are domiciled. All other state candidates qualify at the Louisiana State Archives in Baton Rouge.

Early voted for the election will be 8:30 a.m.-6 p.m. Sept. 30-Oct. 7.

Candidates will be required to provide an email address and present a valid Louisiana driver’s license or Louisiana identification card.

Qualifying fees vary for each office and must be paid at time of qualifying.
