John Allen Mistretta, Sr., a pillar of strength, intelligence, and selfless love, was called home to his eternal rest on July 16, 2023. Born on July 2, 1944, in Lake Charles, La., John’s journey of life has been a testament to his unyielding faith, his dedication to his family, and his enduring love for his community.

John was a proud graduate of Landry Memorial High School in Lake Charles, La, where he excelled in all his endeavors. He was a swift runner on the track team and a formidable member of the debate club. His unparalleled intelligence was recognized with the Prejean Chemistry Award. John’s thirst for knowledge led him to Northeast Louisiana University in Monroe, La., where he earned a bachelor’s degree in microbiology. His academic achievements laid a strong foundation for his remarkable career.

John’s professional life was marked by his significant contributions to the food industry. His innovative approach to quality control procedures for rice revolutionized the way many plants processed rice and rice-related products. His microbiology labs became beacons of progress and efficiency, reflecting John’s commitment to excellence and innovation. His work was a testament to his intelligence, his dedication, and his steadfast commitment to improving the world around him.

John’s love for exploration and learning extended beyond his professional life. He and his beloved wife, Joanne, journeyed across the globe, exploring numerous European countries. Together, they embraced the beauty and diversity of the world. John’s adventurous spirit led him to conquer the heights of Machu Picchu in his sixties, a testament to his resolute determination. His love for travel was equally matched by his love for his home country. John and Joanne explored North America in their motorhome, finding joy in every journey.

John’s dedication to his community was evident in his volunteer work. He served faithfully at his church, Our Mother of Sorrows in Burnet, and devoted his time to the local food bank. His selflessness and love for his community were an inspiration to all who knew him.

John leaves behind his beloved wife, Joanne, and their two sons, John Allen Mistretta, Jr. and Jeremy Adam Mistretta. He is preceded in death by his parents, Bessie Elizabeth Pecararo Mistretta and Bennie Mistretta, and his sister, Francis Chamberlin. His legacy will live on in the hearts of those who loved him, and his life will continue to inspire those who knew him.

As we remember John, let us recall the words of the Apostle Paul in 2 Timothy 4:7, 

“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” 

John Allen Mistretta, Sr. indeed fought a good fight, finished his race with grace, and kept his faith till the very end. 

John’s life was a testament to his intelligence, his love for his family, and his selfless service to his community. As we bid him farewell, let us celebrate the life of a man who enriched the lives of those around him, a man who loved unconditionally, and a man who served his community with unwavering dedication. John Allen Mistretta, Sr., you will be deeply missed, but your legacy will live on in our hearts forever.
