BREAKING: Arrests made in LC shooting

Arrests have been made in the early Wednesday morning fatal shooting of a 20-year-old Lake Charles man at an apartment complex in the 4100 block of 5th Avenue.

Lake Charles Police responded to the call just after midnight and discovered a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Deputy Chief Franklin Fondel said Acadian Ambulance pronounced the victim — later identified as Jayden Drashon Shelby — dead at the scene.

Fondel said officers learned that prior to the shooting, Shelby was sitting outside the apartment complex when two suspects arrived on foot and a verbal altercation ensued. During the altercation, one suspect — identified as 21-year-old Justin Lequinn Malbrough of Lake Charles — produced a firearm and began shooting, striking the victim multiple times. Both suspects then fled the area.

Fondel said Malbrough had just been released from Ouachita Parish Corrections on,July 11 after completing a sentence for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, simple burglary and theft of a firearm.

The second suspect was identified as 22-year-old Andrew Jordan Dupas of Lake Charles. He was arrested at 7:32 a.m. Wednesday and charged with one count of failure to report the commission of certain felonies. His bond was set at $500,000 by Judge Clayton Davis. He was booked into the Calcasieu Correctional Center where he remains in custody.

At about 12:23 p.m. Wednesday, detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Malbrough for one count of second-degree murder and one count of possession of a firearm or carrying concealed weapon by a person convicted of certain felonies. His bond was set at $2,750,000 by Judge Clayton Davis. He was arrested later that night by SWAT officers and detectives and deputies of the Jeff Davis Sheriff’s Office in the 1900 block of U.S. 90. He was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Jeff Davis Parish Jail for booking before being transported to the Calcasieu Correctional Center where he remains in custody.
