For the second time in five years, Matt Fontenot is enjoying a Homecoming.
The former St. Louis High baseball coach has moved back into the college ranks at McNeese State.
Fontenot was a baseball player at both schools and after four years back at his high school, the man who helped restore the Saints program is returning to his college.
Fontenot was officially named Senior Associate Athletics Director of External Affairs at McNeese Wednesday, replacing Todd Butler who left to become the recruiting baseball coordinator and assistant coach at Oklahoma.
“This is a home run for us,” said McNeese Athletic Director Heath Schroyer. “Matt is the perfect person at the perfect time for this department.
“He has big-time football administrative experience and great ties to the community we can really use at this point. Matt will bring great culture to McNeese and keep our momentum moving forward.”
Fontenot posted a 78-37 record in four years at St. Louis.
“I am an alum of St. Louis and a baseball player there,” Fontenot told the American Press earlier this week. “It was an honor to go back and serve the program. I was fortunate to do it and bring success to a program I love. “Not just from a baseball standpoint, but the school is undergoing a lot of changes. They are on the cusp of doing something unbelievable. Those plans are still moving forward. I was a big part of those plans, so it was tough to walk away from it.”
St. Louis is building a new school after its campus was destroyed by Hurricane Laura back in Aug. of 2020, but Fontenot will still have a big part in a rebuild.
McNeese continues to undergo major upgrades from the same storm and is working on a move up to the Football Bowl Subdivision level.
“Excited to see McNeese with a vision and plan to move forward,” Fontenot said. “It is bold and a lot is going on. I’m looking forward to being a part of it.”
This is also an opportunity to get back into the college ranks. Fontenot was the Director of Football Operations at Texas A&M before going to St. Louis, having moved up to that position during his six years at the school.
“My time at Texas A&M and St. Louis Catholic has given me a great perspective on both the challenges and opportunities in front of McNeese, and I’m looking forward to the work ahead,” Fontenot said.
He helped the Aggies move into the SEC, which could benefit McNeese as it looks to jump into Conference USA.
“I do have experience on that, but I have a huge heart for this place,” Fontenot said. “McNeese has always been a place I had a desire to work at.”
Fontenot will oversee football, baseball and soccer as part of his duties at McNeese. That will include the new football press box at Cowboy Stadium and the rebuilt indoor baseball facilities.
All part of his second Homecoming.
