George Anthony de Gravelle Jr.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, May 9, 2023, at 10 a.m. in the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist for George Anthony de Gravelle Jr., 76, who passed away at his home surrounded by family in Lafayette, on May 1, 2023.

A private family interment will be held at Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Scott, La.

The Rev. Michael Richard will officiate services along with Concelebrants The Very Rev. Chester C. Arceneaux, VF and Reverend Edwin Martin. Musicians will be Tom Niel, Organist, Raymond Hebert, Vocalist, Karen Melancon, Vocalist and Lauren Baker, Violinist. Lectors will be Adrienne Credeur Gale, Dr. Robert F. Richard and Raymond Francis de Gravelle.  

Survivors include his loving wife, Deborah Martin de Gravelle of Lafayette; one daughter, Aimee de Gravelle Trahan and her husband, Brandon C. Trahan of Lafayette; two grandchildren, Hayes Alexander Trahan and Grace Turner Trahan; one sister, Nancy de Gravelle Zembower and her husband, Charles Gayle Zembower of Lake Charles; two sisters-in-law, Annadine Provost Credeur and her husband, James Allen Credeur of Scott, and Carmen Maria Martin of Lafayette; two brothers-in-law, John Martin III and Sherry Martin of Virginia, Thomas Anthony Martin and his wife, Maria Martin of Lafayette.

Preceded in death by his parents, Leona Billeaud de Gravelle and George Anthony de Gravelle; one sister, Mary Virginia Ann de Gravelle.

George was born Sept. 4, 1946, in New Iberia, son of George Anthony de Gravelle Sr. and Leona Billeaud de Gravelle. He was a graduate of St. Peter’s College (now Catholic High of New Iberia) and the University of Southwestern LA (now University of Louisiana).  George retired in 2003 as Associate Administrator of University Medical Center in Lafayette after serving 32 years. He was a 49-year member of Red Lerille’s regularly there 5-6 days per week, active member in Krewe of Versailles, Triton, Troubadours, Gabriel, Rio, Xanadu, and Olympus where, for 30 plus years he served in countless leadership roles.  He also was a 20 plus year volunteer with Miles Perret Cancer Services, Festivals International, Lafayette Visitor’s Center, Acadiana Recovery Center, and the University of Louisiana Alumni Association Homecoming Committee.  George also was an active stockholder in Billeaud Companies. He adored his 2001 Mazda MX-5 Miata convertible with UL License Plate #5. George was a passionate lover of family, Mardi Gras, his family trips to Aruba and giving back to the Lafayette community.

Pallbearers will be Seth Patrick Gale, Aidan Patrick Gale, Timothy Patrick Gale, Jacob Christopher Credeur, Kevin Patrick Zembower, and Todd Edward Zembower.

Honorary Pallbearers will be James Allen Credeur, Dr. John Matthew Martin and Charles Gayle Zembower.

A Rosary will be recited on Monday, May 8, 2023, at 6:30 p.m. at Martin & Castille’s Downtown location.

The family requests that visitation be observed on Monday, May 8, 2023, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Martin & Castille’s Downtown location. Visitation will continue on Tuesday, May 9, 2023, in the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist from 8 a.m. until time of services. A Celebration of Life reception will be hosted from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. following the Funeral Mass at Cathedral Hall. The family welcomes all family and friends to attend.
