Voters in Elton on Saturday approved a one-cent sales tax proposition for street improvements.
The vote on the 10-year, one-cent sales tax passed 92-31, or 75 percent in favor, according to complete but unofficial results from the Louisiana Secretary of State’s office.
The proposition was the only issue on the ballot in Jeff Davis Parish.
The sales tax will be used by the town for maintenance, improvement and construction of streets, including obtaining equipment and vehicles.
Revenue will also be used to help fund improvements to the town’s animal shelter.
The sales tax is expected to generate about $121,000 a year for the town from purchases made within the town limits.
The revenues make up about 40 percent of the town’s budget.
The tax began in 1991 and was renewed in 2000 and 2010, but expired in 2020 after officials failed to call for a tax renewal.
Voter turnout for the election was 17 percent with 123 of the 729 registered voters casting ballots.
