The Westlake City Council honored the Westlake High School Girls Basketball Team for its season accomplishments and heard about a new Parkinson’s support group that’s meeting this week.

The Westlake High School Rams made it to the Quarterfinals of the LHSAA Girls Basketball State Playoffs. Each player received a Certificate of Appreciation and a small reception with refreshments was hosted by the City in their honor.

In 2014, Rick Johnston knew something was happening to his body, he told the Council, but he wasn’t to receive a diagnosis until four years later. As a result of his challenges, and in an effort to help others who have been diagnosed with Parkinson’s or who loves someone who has, Johntson has started Progress with Parkinson’s, a support group that meets on the third Tuesday of the month at 6 p.m. at the Westlake Recreation Boardroom, 1221 Sampson Street.

“We’re building resources every day so people will know they can still have quality of life,” Johnston said.

A Deep Brain Specialist (DBS) will be speaking at the April 18 meeting. Information on diet, exercise and nutrition will be offered. Drinks and a light meal will be served.

Rhonda Cupit was announced as the Sabine River Authority Representative. Bobby LeTard was appointed as the City’s representative for the Board of Directors of the West Calcasieu Parish Community Center Authority. William “Bill” Curera announced his candidacy for Family and Juvenile Court Judge.

Fire Chief Jonathan Duff told the Council and Mayor about being honored by the Louisiana 1st Responders Christian Association for its life-saving operation.
