Fresh from a winning weekend, the Cowboys welcome an old friend who is off to a fast start.
McNeese State’s bats came alive last weekend as the Cowboys took two of three from Texas-Arlington on the road to improve to 3-4.
“Anytime you can win a series on the road against a good team that is a big deal,” said McNeese head coach Justin Hill.
Today the Cowboys welcome Louisiana-Lafayette to Joe Miller Ballpark for a 6 p.m. game. The Cajuns are 6-1 after sweeping a four-game home series against Brigham Young last week.
It is the start of five-game week for McNeese, which will travel to Baton Rouge on Wednesday for a game at Southern University. The Cowboys return home for a three-game weekend series against George Washington.
“We are at the back end of a challenging stretch,” Hill said. “It will keep coming at us right now.”
McNeese will send right-hander Kainin Morrow (0-0, 3.86 ERA) to the mound to start against the Ragin’ Cajuns. Morrow, a junior from Sulphur, will be making his first start after a pair of relief appearances.
Morrow has struck out four but walked six in 42/3 innings of work.
The Cajuns will counter withy righty Brendan Moody (0-0, 1.17 ERA), a junior from Iowa. Moody has appeared in 7 2/3 innings in three games with one start.
Moody has struck out 10 while walking two.
Lafayette has three hitters with .400 or better averages. Mason Zambo leads the way at .429 with Heath Hood hitting .423.
The Cajuns have hit five homers and are scoring 6.8 runs a game and are always a big rivalry.
“We don’t live in a vacuum,” Hill said. “You can’t ignore the energy when we play them. We will have juice but the Cajuns are not our target.”
Cooper Text leads the McNeese regulars with a .333 average and a pair of home runs. Elliott Hebert is hitting .444 in three games with three doubles.
The Cowboys are looking to hit their stride, especially in the bullpen.
“It’s about the ability to top the bleeding,” Hill said.
Hill aid McNeese is likely to use a bullpen game both tonight and against Southern.
