Oakdale, Hathaway and Fairview reach state finals

HAMMOND — Oakdale’s Emani Young drilled a 3-pointer at the final buzzer to give the Warriors a 47-46 win over Arcadia in a Division VI nonselect semifinal.

The No. 9 Warriors (19-12) advanced to face the winner of tonight’s No. 3 Oak Grove vs. No. 2 Lakeview game.

Oakdale led by four going into the fourth quarter, but Arcadia (24-8) opened the fourth quarter with an 8-0 run to take a 42-38 lead.

Oakdale tied the score at 44-44 on a basket by Akeelah Hobson. Arcadia went ahead on a basket by DeAsia Alexander with 7 seconds left.

The Warriors got the ball across half court and Hobson drilled a long 3-pointer for the win.

“We never gave up,” Oakdale head coach Renotta Edwards said. “We kept grinding, making layups and free throws and made the three at the buzzer.”

Young had 18 points and 10 rebounds to lead Oakdale, which reached the state tournament with a win at No. 1 White Castle in the regional round. Kaylee Bradley added 10 points.

Alexander led Arcadia with 16 points. Justice Young added 12 points and 16 rebounds. The Hornets struggled at the free throw line, finishing 6 of 19 from the charity stripe. Oakdale made 14 of 18 from the line.

Hathaway found its 3-point shooting touch in the second quarter and held on to advance to the final for the third time in four seasons.

The Hornets went 0-13 from downtown in the first quarter and trailed the Blackcats 8-4. Chaylee Beard nailed a trio of 3s in the second quarter to help Hathaway slip into halftime with a 17-16 lead.

The Hornets forced 19 turnovers.

“We shot terrible tonight, but we made up for it on the defensive end,” Hathaway head coach Courtneé Hollins said. “It wasn’t pretty but we were able to win and go to the championship.”

Beard led three Hornets in double figures with 14 points. Lamiyah Sanchez finished with 12 points and Sienna Guidry added 11. J’Nasura Richardson led Florien with 15 points and 22 rebounds

Hathaway will face the winner of No. 1 Fairview in the final at 8 p.m. Friday. The Hornets lost to Fairview in the finals in 2020 and 2021.

Fairview surged ahead in the second half to secure its fourth consecutive state championship game appearance with a 68-54 win over District 5-C rival Reeves in the Division V nonselect semifinals on Monday night.

Fairview led by as many as 13 points in the second quarter before the Raiders were able to close the game to nine, 34-25, by halftime.

The Panthers picked up the pace in the third quarter to out score the Raiders 23-8 to take a 57-33 lead.

The Raiders had to adjust in the third quarter after senior forward Faith Cauthron, who is a powerful presence in the lane, fouled out with 5:09 left in the quarter. Cauthron finished with 7 points and 6 rebounds.

Ella Reeves led the three-time defending state champion Panthers with a game-high 26 points. Avery Williams scored 14 points, Reesie Jinks had 12 points and 9 assists and Kaylee Guillory finished with 11 points. Bella Smith had 17 rebounds.

Sophomore Hope Cauthron led Reeves with a 18-point, 13-rebound double-double. Point guard Maddie Ford had 12 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists before fouling out.
