McNeese State will have a new starting quarterback in the fall.

Knox Kadum, who started seven games last season before injuring his throwing shoulder, announced he was entering the transfer portal for the second straight year.

Kadum came to McNeese in January of 2022 from Virginia Tech. He won the starting job over Cam Ransom but never really owned it.

Kadum struggled going 81 of 162 for 964 yards and six touchdowns while throwing 10 interceptions.

The Cowboys were just 1-6 in games he started. They finished the year 4-7 and on a three-game winning streak.

Kadum was sacked a whopping 28 times last fall which accounted for him finishing with negative 35 yards rushing.

Monday afternoon Kadum tweeted:

“First, I would like to say thank you to Coach (Gary) Goff and his staff for believing in me and giving me the opportunity to play for them. Although the time spent together was short it was a journey full of memories that will last a lifetime. It’s been a pleasure sharing the field with the brothers I made during this time. I know big things are going to happen for you all. That being said, I am entering the portal as Graduate Transfer with two years of eligibility remaining.”

McNeese signed four quarterbacks this offseason, two from the portal.

Nate Glantz and Charles “Tre” Simmons were signed in December and later joined by high schoolers Kamden Sixkiller and Davion Wilson earlier this month.

Glantz is from Iowa State while Simmons joins the Pokes from Division II Tusculum University in Florida. The two are expected to battle it out for the starting job when spring camp begins on March 8.

Goff has said he hopes that a true No. 1 quarterback comes out of camp.

The Cowboys started three different quarterbacks last season while playing four.

The Kadum decision doesn’t come as a surprise after last season or the addition of four fresh arms into the quarterback room.

Kadum joins Ransom in the portal.
