The fifth-ranked Sulphur Tors soccer team is in uncharted territory with their first semifinal game in program history just a couple of days away.
Sulphur is one of three area teams that will play in the semifinals this weekend along with the St. Louis Catholic boys and girls teams in Division III.
The Tors (18-3-4) face No. 9 Dutchdown at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Division I semifinals. The Griffins (12-3-6) upset No. 1 Catholic-Baton Rouge 1-0 in overtime on Tuesday and knocked the Tors out of the playoffs two seasons ago in the regional round on the Tors’ home field. Since then the Tors have lost one home game. Dutchtown lost 1-0 in the final last year to Catholic.
The Tors’ success has come despite losing most of their starters from last year’s quarterfinal team.
“Not a lot of people thought that we would have the success that we have had this year,” Sulphur head coach Trevor Foolkes said. “It is just the desire and hunger to compete to win a game.
“It is exciting times.”
Robert Campos set a single-season school record with 30 goals, while the defense has made huge strides, led by senior goalkeeper Erick Zuniga (0.56 goals allowed per game), a four-year starter.
St. Louis Catholic
The third-ranked St. Louis boys (17-3-4) are looking to reach the final for the first time since winning their 13th state championship in 2017.
The Saints are led by forward Jackson Avery’s 38 goals and travel to No. 2 Bossier (22-2-2) at 2 p.m. Saturday. The Bearcats, a semifinalist a year ago, beat the Saints 4-0 in the regular season.
The No. 4 St. Louis girls travel to No. 1 Archbishop Hannan at 5 p.m. Friday. The Saints last reached the final in 2010.
The Saints (14-6-3) are coming off a last-minute win over E.D. White in the quarterfinals and have three players with three postseason goals in Gracie Savoie, Addison Moreno and Jenna McNamara.
Archbishop Hannan (14-4-4) was the Division III state runner-up last season.
