Sam Houston’s Chevy Coleman third female to place at state wrestling tournament

Sam Houston sophomore Chevy Coleman became the third female to place at the Louisiana High School Athletic Association state wrestling finals on Saturday at the Brookshire Grocery Arena in Bossier City.

Coleman placed fifth at 106-pounds in Division II.

She reached the quarterfinal of the championship bracket before working her way through the consolation bracket with two pins and winning by forfeit over Nathan Hester (Archbishop Rummel) in the fifth place match.

Coleman went 4-2 at the state tournament.

The only other females to place at the state tournament are Benton’s Sharon McDonald (2004, 4th) and Doyline’s Brittany Bates (2014, 5th, 106, Division III).

Consolation bracket

Division II

No. 2 Caleb Lavine (Sam Houston) beat No. 5 Riley Williams (Belle Chasse) by major decision, 17-8, to take the bronze medal at 145-pounds.

In the 152-pound third place match, No. 5 Peyton Miller (Sam Houston) broke up a 4-4 tie with a reversal and near fall in the third period to beat No. 3 Chase Smart (North DeSoto) 9-6.

No. 7 Colt Fisher (Sam Houston) won the fifth 220-pound fifth place match, edging No. 5 Robert Breaux (Rayne) 6-4.

Division III

No. 3 Kye Smith (Basile) won two matches in under a minute each in the consolation bracket and placed third in Division III 113-pounds. He pinned No. 7 Sherman McElroy (Glen Oaks) in 54 seconds in the third place match. DeQuincy’s Lawton Royer placed sixth.

South Beauregard’s Craig Miller placed sixth at Division III 120-pounds.

At 126 pounds, No. 3 Jay Guillory (Basile) took the bronze medal and No. 5 Grant Habetz (St. Louis) placed fifth. Guillory beat Evan Harding (Archbishop Hannan) 7-1 in the third place match, while Habetz pinned Dylan Brown (DeLaSalle) in 3:13.

At 132 pounds, No. 7 Landon Thibodeaux (Basile) defeated No. 5 Jacob Rogers (Vinton) 6-1 in the fifth place match.

Tucker Leblanc (Basile) lost to No. 4 Seth Lowe (Archbishop Hannan) 9-7 in overtime of the 138-pound fifth place match.

No. 4 Nolan McMichael (St. Louis) lost to No. 5 Tristan Wagner (Archbishop Hannan) in the 145-pound fifth place match (pin, 4:48).

No. 4 Parker Fontenot (Basile) placed fourth at 152 points after a 7-2 loss to No. 2 David Massicot (John Curtis) in the third place match, and No. 5 Noah Williamson (St. Louis) pinned Genti Brahimi (Episcopal) in 1:54 in the fifth place match.

No. 2 Luke Fontenot (Basile) took home bronze at 160 points after a close 2-0 win over No. 1 Jason Brown (Archbishop Shaw) in the third place match.

Jackson Courville (Basile) won 6-2 over No. 4 Jordan Rogers (Vinton) to take fifth at 170 pounds.

No. 3 Graham Montet (St. Louis) took third at 182-pounds after pinning No. 4 James Nero (Archbishop Shaw) nine seconds into the second period.

No. 4 Ethan Goss (St. Louis) beat No. 5 Damari Drake (Evangel Christian) 3-1 in the 195-pound third place match.

No. 6 Scott Berzas took fifth at 285-pounds with a 5-4 win over Logan Barnes (John Curtis).
